LLEIDA PANORAMA
Lleida Panorama es una iniciativa de la Demarcació de Lleida del Col·legi d’Arquitectes, en convenio con el Ajuntament de Lleida-La Paeria. Este libro, presentado en Lleida el día 22 de abril de 1996, es una muestra del trabajo fotográfico realizado por los autores, expuesto por primera vez en la Sala de la Nueva Sede de la Demarcación de Lleida del Colegio de Arquitectos de Cataluña, en el marco de la octava Primavera Fotográfica.

Puedo creer, por ejemplo, que tengo entre las manos un libro abierto sobre la ciudad de Lleida, pero a simple vista en un libro de imágenes y, en concreto, de reproducciones fotográficas. El libro manifiesta ante todo una ausencia: la de las fotografías originales, la ausencia, para la persona sensible, de su tacto visual particular, de las cualidades plásticas propias de las imágenes argénticas. Pero si prescindo de esta carencia, cada una de las reproducciones del libro transmite la naturaleza específica de la imagen fotográfica, su relación directa, obligada, con la luz de cierta ciudad. Cada imagen testimonia la presencia del fotógrafo en ese lugar, a esa hora, con la luz de esa ciudad. Para mí, que ignoro todo sobre Lleida, sólo el título del libro me lo indica. Otros, como por ejemplo sus habitantes, la reconocerán en seguida, o quizás no. Este libro manifiesta pues cierta incertidumbre respecto a la ciudad de Lleida: primero una ausencia, después una incertidumbre…
En todo caso, quien quiera asegurarse deberá remitirse al título o a las explicaciones que pretenden aclarar el significado de las imágenes. (Pues obviamente, una fotografía, como un nombre propio, carece de significado). Ni la palabra “Lleida”, ni una imagen de Lleida tienen sentido, nombre e imagen, sólo tienen referente. Ahora bien, estoy menos dispuesto que nunca a confiar en los autores de las explicaciones. Como el tonto al que señalan la luna, mi mirada también tropieza con el dedo. No veo el astro que brilla, sólo veo la imagen. Esa presencia en imagen es para mí el verdadero sentido de una fotografía. Si me afirmasen que se trata de una imagen de Lleida, estaría de acuerdo, pero en el fondo, sé que nadie puede tomar una imagen de Lleida —en todo caso se puede hacer una fotografía de Lleida.
Tal es, a mi entender, el proceso en el que se inscriben los trabajos fotográficos de este libro. Sus autores no pretenden tanto presentar hechos (sus fotografías) como producirlos. Así, con la excusa de una confrontación entre el estado de las cosas y el orden de las imágenes, el espectador puede alimentar la imaginación y ejercitar su discernimiento. Se trata pues de una ética del arte. (…)
Lleida Panorama is an initiative promoted by the Lleida Branch of the College of Architects of Catalonia, with the collaboration of the Town Hall of Lleida-La Paeria. This book, presented in Lleida on April the 22nd 1996, is a sample of the photographic work rendered by the authors, first exhibited at the new headquarters of the Lleida Branch of the College of Architects of Catalonia, included in the activities of the eighth edition of the Primavera Fotogràfica.

I may believe, for example, that I have here in my hands an open book about the city of Lleida, but obviously here is a book of images and, more precisely, a book of reproductions of photographs. First of all it revelas an absence: that of the original photographs, the absence, for anyone aware of it, of their particular visual touch, of the plastic qualities peculiar to the silver-plated images. If, nevertheless, I can get over that deficiency, each reproduction in the book is a good expression of the specific nature of the photographic image, the direct, necessary relationship which it induces with the light of a particular city. Each image bears witness to the photographer’s presence in that place, at that time, to his presence in the light of that city. But, for me, who know nothing about it, the only evidence that the city is Lleida is the title. For other people, the ones who live there, for example, recognition may be immediate, but also it may not be. And so this book shows a certain uncertainty about the city of Lleida. First and absence, then an uncertainty.
In any case, anyone seeking assurance will have to turn to the title or the captions, which always claim to clarify the meaning of the images. (For, of course, a photograph —any more than a proper noun— has no meaning. Neither the word “Lleida” nor an image of Lleida have any meaning. Name and image only have a referent). Now I am less than ever inclined to trust the people who put in the captions. Like the idiot who is shown the moon, I also stare at the finger that is pointing to it. I do not see the motif shining, I do not see the image. Its presence as an image, such is for me the true meaning of a photograph. If I were assured that it is an image of Lleida, I would like to agree, but deep down I know that no-one ever takes an image of Lleida; at the most one might take a photograph in Lleida.
Such, it seems to me, is the process in which the photographic works in this book are set. Their authors are less concerned with presenting facts than with producing others: their photographs. And that is how, then there is a confrontation between the state of things and the order of images, the musing of the beholder may be nourished and his discernment exercised. Here it is indeed a question of an ethic of art. (…)
