Welcome to Espaiñ es un viaje por los tópicos y arquetipos de España. El retrato de un fotógrafo cuya intención no es tanto documentar lo que encuentra sino exponer, con ironía y una cierta ternura, la vida que yace tras lo aparentemente ordinario. Jordi Bernadó cruza el territorio español, parándose a capturar todos aquellos instantes, personajes y lugares que, de una forma más bien exagerada, refuerzan los estereotipos del país.
“Cutre” es una descripción obvia de muchas de las escenas representadas. Sin embargo, no es tanto la estética en sí lo que resulta fascinante, sino la flagrante obviedad con la que ésta se exhibe en las imágenes. La fealdad –eso es, la performance exagerada de la fealdad– se convierte en un nuevo lenguaje, uno cuya gramática está llena de bellezas escondidas.
A medio camino entre el libro de viajes, el documental y la ficción visual, Welcome to Espaiñ explora la relación entre paisaje e identidad. En lugar de tomar una posición crítica hacia las escenas que fotografía, Bernadó se acerca a ellas con incredulidad y sentido del humor.
El objetivo no es glorificar España, tampoco envilecer, sino desenmascarar aquello que podríamos llamar la vida secreta de los clichés. Es decir, la forma en la que el conocimiento se sedimenta y distorsiona para producir aquello que conocemos como belleza, como estatus social, decoro o tradición. Todos estos conceptos se ven cuestionados a través de la mirada del artista.
Los estereotipos forman la base de este extraño viaje al corazón de la esencia española, guían al fotógrafo en su camino por la delgada línea entre la verdad y la mentira, entre la historia y la fantasía. Este es, ante todo, un repositorio de fantasías, una colección de deseos fragmentados, distorsionados y desubicados. La promesa de la felicidad. Creérsela o no, eso ya es una cuestión de voluntad. Welcome to Espaiñ is a journey across the Spanish archetypes and stereotypes. A portrait as seen through the lens of a photographer whose intention is not so much to document what he encounters but to expose, with both irony and tenderness, the life that lies behind apparent ordinariness. Jordi Bernadó embarks on a journey across the country, stopping to capture all those instants, characters, sites that, in a rather exaggerated fashion, fit into the notion of the Spanish stereotype.
“Cutre” –term for tacky or vulgar– is an obvious description of most of the scenes portrayed. Yet, it is not so much the cheap aesthetic that is important here, but the flagrant obviousness with which it is displayed in the images. Ugliness –that is, the exaggerated performance of ugliness– becomes a new form of language, one whose grammar is full of hidden beauty.
Halfway between travel book, documentary, and visual fiction, Welcome to Espaiñ casts new light on the relationship between landscape and identity. Rather than take a critical stance with regard to the subjects and objects photographed, Bernadó approaches the scenery with incredulity and a certain sense of humour.
The point is not to glorify Spain nor to decry it, but to unmask what we could call the secret life of clichés. That is, the way in which knowledge sediments to form preconceived standards of beauty, of social status, of propriety, of tradition. All of these concepts are thrown into question through the artist’s gaze.
Stereotypes form the basis of this bizarre journey into the core of Spanish essence, like a compass guiding the photographer along the edge between truth and lie, between history and fantasy. This is, above all, a repository of fantasies, a collection of fragmented, distorted, and displaced desires. The promise of happiness.
